Things to Do, Club Suggestions, Side Trips, and More!
Last year, South Padre was the largest Spring Break venue in the nation with daily crowds of 10,000 – 15,000 people enjoying various events throughout the island. The biggest attraction was the “Sprite Remix Berryclear” event, a multi-level beach stage featuring MTV and exciting contests, bands, giveaways and the world debut of the new Sprite Remix BerryClear softdrink! For 2005, Coca-Cola, the parent company of Sprite, will return to the Island and kick-off with a whole new event—bigger and better than last year’s.
Here’s a listing of what went on during Spring Break 2004:
- Sprite ReMix Beach Stage Event (as mentioned above). Events ran from 11am – 5pm daily from March 10 to the 24 th. Music, Comedy, Fashion, Bizarre—you name it, this event has it.
- Sprite ReMix Mixing Tour – Spring Breakers had the opportunity to “mix” like the pros utilizing a state-of-the-art Live Mixing or Scratching Station.
- U.S. Army Adventure Tower – Located right on the beach front of the Radisson Resort Hotel, the Army Adventure Tower was a 50 ft tall obstacle course loaded with rock climbing poles, rappelling ropes, and cargo nets waiting for students to test their kills on over 30 courses.
- Film Production – Reality shows and other college documentaries were shot during the Spring Break season. Bystanders were able to participate as extras and, in some cases, actors in various films. The Real World celebrities joined in the fun at several clubs throughout the night.
- Girls Gone Wild – Yep, no hiding from these folks. They follow the hottest parties! Why weren’t they in Florida or Cancun? Because SPI was the place to be!
- Tons of Musical Guests - Last year, SPI had Ludacris, Run DMC, Robert Earl Keen, Paul Oakenfold, DJ Skribble and guest appearances by huge stars such as Snoop Doggy Dog.
- Clubs - Many clubs throughout the Island have their own special events going on. Be sure to check out our “Island Calendar of Events” to find out what is happening during YOUR Spring Break.
- When not partying, students learned how to surf, parasail, kayak, horseback ride, fish, and much more.
- Booze Cruises – Large boats filled with Beer and DJs were outfitted for an awesome night time experience on the Bay.
- Shop – Lots of interesting shops catered specifically to the Spring Break crowd.
This year, many of the same events will be returning to South Padre as they have for the past year. Don’t forget to check out our SPI Calendar of Events link to see who and what is coming down for Spring Break 2005.

South Padre Island Clubs
Many fun and exciting clubs exist on the Island, however, the following are the most popular according to polls, my personal experiences, and from discussions with other students. These clubs are also "18+ age" friendly.
- Tequila Frogs – probably the overall BEST club on the Island with the most events, shows and celebrities. They are known world-wide.
- Louie’s Back Yard – one of the original and first successful clubs on the Island, and one of the biggest. Their drinks and food are fantastic.
- Chaos – another big club. This one has the largest dance floor on the Island and packs in the most people.
- Club 202 – great music, great people and amazing atmosphere. This club has more personality and character than the others, but is smaller.
- Crazy Lazys – a club in Mexico with an underground-Mexican feel to it. Since it’s in another country, many people get a bit more crazier here, if you know what I mean. Free all-you-can-drink beer all night long.
- Schlitterbahn - Extremely popular with the 18+ crowd. Great musical guests and fun atmosphere!
Chances are, you’ll be spending the majority of your time at the clubs mentioned above, however, there are several additional smaller-scale clubs that are pretty good. For a full list, go here.
Side Trips & Excursions
Unless you are the type that can party 24/7, you may want to take a break from all the action and check out the local area. Here are some popular suggestions:
- Relax on the Beach - relax anywhere on the beaches of South Padre Island. The further North you go, the less people and noise. You can actually drive on the beach for an additional 26 miles of nothing but sand dunes, seagulls and the ultimate in tranquility. (click here to read my “4x4 on South Padre Island” article)
- A Trip to Mexico – Spice up your trip to South Padre Island by taking a 25 mile detour and head to Matamoros, a bustling Mexican border town. Matamoros receives thousands of visitors each year and is known for their shops, food and friendly people. (tips and tricks about going to Mexico coming soon....)
- Water Sports – Banana Boat rides, Catamaran/hobie-cart rentals, fishing, Jet Ski, waverunners, kiteboardings, paddle boats, parasailing, scuba diving lessons, and more are available around South Padre Island.
- Horseback Riding on the Beach – Discover the undeveloped portions of South Padre Island via horse. Ride through sand dunes, beautiful sunsets, view wildlife, and much more. All skill levels are accommodated.
- Rio Grande Valley – discover the culture and flavor of one of the most historic regions in Texas . Try a Texas Ruby Red grapefruit that is known world-wide, dine in one of several Mexican restaurants that populate the region, try a “Raspa” (Mexican snow cone), visit the nation’s last remaining tropical rainforest at Sabal Palms Auduborn Sanctuary, climb to the top of the Port Isabel lighthouse, view Civil War and Mexican/American War Battlefields, and much more.
Cheap Beer
Looking for cheap beer? You can get a keg at Ben's Liquor Store for around $55. Premium beer kegs will set you back about $88.
