Overview:
One of the best museums in the Rio Grande Valley, the
Port Isabel Historical Museum
is actually two museums located adjacent to one another. One of the museums is housed in a historic building built in 1899 by a pioneer family of Port Isabel. It features numerous hands-on exhibits, videos and audio presentations. The museum has two exhibit levels, a theater, a gift shop and one of the largest collections of Mexican artifacts from the U.S.-Mexican War.
The
Treasures of the Gulf
is the second museum and tells the story of three ill-fated Spanish ships that were wrecked off the coast of Padre Island during a storm in 1554. Exhibits include murals, artifacts and hands-on activities. The Children's Discovery Lab teaches visitors about marine archeology and includes a small scale ship for kids to board as they imagine themselves sailing the Gulf waters.

This is a pretty cool museum, but even better is the antique store across the street. In fact a lot of the artifacts in this museum are actually on loan from the man that own's the antique store!!!
